The Eastern Cape is renowned for its exceptional biological diversity. It is an area where seven of South Africa’s nine biomes come together. Many of the unique plants and animals that live here are not found anywhere else.
The Kromme-Kouga-Koukamma area is a part of this abundant diversity. The Kouga and Kromme Rivers flow through the valleys between the Baviaanskloof and Tsitsikamma mountain ranges. This variable landscape means that there are many habitats for different species. Several ecosystems here have lost much of their original area because of agriculture, plantations and urban expansion, and now a number of species are threatened with extinction.
